Welcome to Otters class page
This year we hope to share lots of the exciting things we learn about and do with you, so keep checking the page for updates.
This term we have already enjoyed taking part in World Book Day; sharing our favourite books, writing book reviews and of course dressing up!
On Thursday 9th February, year 2 joined together with year 5 for our Super Hero themed Science day. A great time was had by all, investigating ways of conducting electricity, testing out different types of friction, finding out about chemicals that cause a reaction and making and testing out different kinds of slime.
Safer Internet Day
On Tuesday 7th February we took part in Safer Internet Day. Through this we have been talking about technology and life online. Today we read a story all about Smartie the Penguin, who was given a new tablet for his birthday, and needed help with lots of different things. We also learnt a special song that Smartie's parents taught him to help him stay safe online. We wrote the song down to help us remember, here are a couple of them.
'Before you tap and click,
you need to stop and think,
and TELL someone'
We also worked together to draw a film strip of the story.
If you want to share this story again visit Childnet.com/resources/smartie-the-penguin , or look at the powerpoint, bellow, that we shared together.
Our latest book this term is 'The Penguin who wanted to find out' by Jill Tomlinson. We have enjoyed learning about penguins, what they are like and their habitats.
To link in with our book about penguins and Antarctica, we have made some uniquely gorgeous penguins. We used rice and stuffing to fill old socks, cut out felt flippers, beaks, tummies and feet and have given them all a snazzy hat and scarf to keep them warm. We all had a fantastic time making them and cant wait to take them home!
This term Our Power of Reading Text is 'Lila and the Secret of Rain' by David Conway and Jude Daly.
Through this we are enjoying learning about stories from different cultures and the Continent of Africa, particularly the country of Kenya, where the story is set.
We have thought about different types of weather and what it would be like if there was never any rain. we have described different scenes and mapped the story out thinking about the characters changing emotions throughout the story.
Our role play corner have been transformed into an African Hut, where we can practice our own story telling, read about Kenya and try our hand at weaving and threading beads for African necklaces.
We have worked together to create our own small worlds to help us retell the story of 'Lila and the Secret of Rain', using lots of different skills and materials.
In Maths we are working hard to practice our number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 and get even quicker at recalling these. we are also working on place value and adding and taking away on a number line.
Through Literacy and History we have been learning all about The Great Fire of London. We have learnt all about how the fire started and spread as well as how people at the time would have fought the fire and the reasons the fire got out of control so quickly.
In R.E we have continued to learn about Hinduism. This term we have been particularly learning about the festival of Diwali, and the story of Rama and Sita. We have learnt about the different ways Hindu's celebrate and have made our own Diva lamps and Rangoli patterns.
This year our Nativity was 'It's a Baby'. We really enjoyed learning all the songs and were fantastic at learning our lines. A brilliant performance by everyone.
In Literacy we have been reading The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch and The Lighthouse Keepers Cat to link in with our topic on Lighthouses. We have really enjoyed this story and have found Hamish and his antics very funny. We have even had a go at writing our own adventure for Hamish to have next.
