WELCOME TO OUR (almost) LIVE COVERAGE OF BRITISH VALUES DAY!
The Children of Sparrow class have pulled out all the stops today to dress as BRITISH ICONS! I think you have to agree that they look absolutely FANTASTIC!
Welcome to our final term of being in year 3! :(
Thank you to all of you who managed to come along and support your children at our art exhibition. It was a welcome surprise to see so many of you :)
For those of you that couldn't make it...fear not! I photographed their displays so that you can see them right here. You may have heard that there was some magic at work; and you would be correct! Mr Gillies' latest technological experiment involves Augmented Reality.
Don't think that you have missed out: I Have videoed the videos for you enjoyment on here :)
What is augmented reality?
A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view...
OR, in human language: looking through a view finder (camera) of smart technology, an image will trigger a video to play.
Without further a do, here was our art exhibition :)
We have been SO SO SO busy in Sparrow class that the website has fallen behind just a little, but fear not....
WE ARE BACK!
And this week...THE FORCE REALLY DOES AWAKEN!
What a lovely surprise!
I noticed some new class members when I let the children into class this morning... None other than DARTH VADER and PRINCESS LEIA!
After lunch we split into two teams...
TEAM JEDI and TEAM SITH. The two sides will battle it out all of this week. The members of the winning team will all receive a prize!
We then worked out our STAR WARS name! It's easy to work out...Follow these steps:
1. Take the first 3 letters of your surname.
2. Add the first 2 letters of your forename.
3. First 3 letters of a pets name.
4. Add the first 3 letters of the month you were born.....DONE!
Then we conducted a mini experiment :)
Mr Gillies managed to source some special raisins and some hydrotech water from the Mos Eisley Cantina on the planet Tatooine. Using these special materials we investigated what would happen if they were put together in a cup.
Competition time again. JEDI vs SITH!
HYPER DRIVE FORCE ROCKETS!
Today we designed our very own Hyper Drive Force Rockets! Using the worm holes that join us here on Earth to the planets of Tatooine and Hoth; we attached our force rockets to the hyper drives and flew!
Again we battled: Jedi Versus Sith...the scene was set!
Here are some pictures of the rockets the children designed:
Due to an electro magnetic pulse in the galaxy the jedi's X-Wings and the Sith's Tie Fighters have lost their deflector shield. Both sides landed on nearby planets to find a quick fix! We managed to make magnetic slime to stick to the ships and act as a shield!!!
We then made our own BB-10 droids ! 2 generations more advanced than BB-8!
We used Ping-Pong balls! cutting a small hole in the bottom we could put a small ball magnet into them and then re-seal the hole.
then using a magnet we were able to make our BB-10's move!!!
Para - Para - Parachutes!
We had to create out own delivery system to deliver the precious Wookie eggs from the skies to the ground!
The children had to get creative as they were only allowed to use a plastic bag, paper, card, sellotape and string.
After doing test drops and amending our designs as we saw fit: it was time to test... WITH the egg!
Dropping from the climbing frame we saw safe delivery of all of our Wookie drops! We concluded that this was due to the eggs landing on the new rubberised surface.
So for a bit more fun, Mr Gillies decided we should drop them off of a wall...onto CONCRETE! Much to his pleasure; they all smashed! here are some awesome slow-mo videos :)
Term 2 - Week two
Attendance was very low this week...As always this is something we need to try and improve on.
We have increased our focus this week on our weekly spellings. Many parents expressed a concern with the difficulty of the spellings in the term 1 parents evening: mirroring my own concern. Thankfully we now have a new spelling programme; and with a fresh push of practising our spellings at least three mornings a week...the results have been FANTASTIC! Thank you for all of your support with the spellings at home.
Our push now is going to be to secure our times tables - with particular focus on 3x tables and 4x tables. I will once again introduce 'top-up' practise for times tables in the mornings this week, but of course your support at home is greatly appreciated as always.
We created some poems this week using similes, tied in with our book 'The Pebble in my Pocket'. The children also chose one of the animals featured in the book and mind mapped what that animals life may be like. Using this mind map the children made up their own stories and delivered them orally - without writing them down! Levi, Finn, Rhianna, Madison, Jermaine, Jacob and Emily are pictured here delivering their stories to the class:
High Flyers this week are:
MADISON HUNT : For improved handwriting
KYLIE WANG - For having an inquisitive mind and a thirst for knowledge
and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to JORMAINE VEGARA!
Term 2 - Week One:
We have had a warp speed first week back, introducing a new text for Literacy and a new topic for the term!
Our book this term will be 'The Pebble in my Pocket’. The book introduces the geological history of the Earth by following the story of a pebble, from its origins in a volcano 480 million years ago, to its place in a busy modern landscape. This ties in nicely this term with our Topic that we have titled:
Rock of Ages!
In Science our focus is with rocks, fossils and soil; while we will be studying The Stoneage in History.
* Unfortunately our attendance this week was below the schools expected minimum of 97%. We need to really push to improve throughout this year.
* Congratulations to Rhianna and Marija for getting the Sparrows High Flyer of the Week certificates :) Well Done!
Rhianna: For writing a FANTASTIC story as extra homework!
Marija: For helping others in class
Well Done to Kylie for being our Hot Shot of the week for 100% on her maths test!
And finally .....
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Sophie :) . The class were very thankful for their sweets!
