Welcome to Year 6 Red Kite Class Web page 2019-20

We hope you enjoy looking through our learning journey so far...

Below you will find a list of the topics to be covered this year:

Below you will find an overview of the Mathematics being taught in Year 6 for the academic year ( September 2019- July 2020).

Term 1 English

Genres taught included: Poetry, descriptive writing, diary entries.

We spent two weeks building up to each piece of writing.

This is the book that we based our English lessons around:

This book has been described by the Sunday Times as 'the most perfect children's book', Eva Ibbotson's Journey to the River Sea is an enchanting read that proves that every kid should live their life full of adventure.

The story of an orphan shipped to her distant relatives, Maia is disappointed when she is not welcomed with the open arms she was expecting... but the wonders of the Amazonian rainforest soon make up for this!

When she meets a mysterious boy who lives alone on the wild river shores, things become even more extraordinary. A beautiful, traditional adventure story, we just knew the children would adore this book.

Term 2 Topic 'A Child's War

Foundation subjects will be taught around the theme of World War 2, linking to the topic of the term.

English lessons will link to the book:

The author provides a thrilling collection of stories about the people who experienced one of Britain's darkest hours - the Blitz of 1940. This book is suitable for young readers, aged 8 and over. The children have found this a compelling, moving, and enlightening collection of true-life tales.

Term 2 - Special afternoon of music. Children sang, played and performed to the famous WW2 song Run Rabbit Run

Term 3 Topic: Blood Heart

English lessons and Foundation subjects will be linked to the book: Pig Heart Boy

The book is about Cameron, who is thirteen and in need of a heart transplant when a pioneering doctor approaches his family with a startling proposal. He can give Cameron a new heart - but from a pig. Cameron is fed up with just sitting on the side of life, always watching and never doing.
