Please make sure that your child has the correct kit in school; black shorts, house t-shirt, black plimsolls for indoors, trainers can be used for outdoor P.E, jogging bottoms may be worn for outside P.E. only. A sweatshirt can be worn when it becomes colder.

Reading/Reading Records

Reading is essential to the learning that takes place in year five.

Your child has been supplied with their reading record book and this needs to be signed each time they read at home.  Please return the reading record everyday for us to see what your child is reading and reward their housepoints.

Our expectation is for each child to read a minimum of 4 times a week.  Each read is rewarded with a housepoint and a maximum of 7 housepoints can be earned each week.

Please encourage your child to read a variety of books, magazines, newspapers.  They can also read online using our subscription to myON and their unique login (see the link below).

Every time your child finishes a book, it is important they use AR (Accelerated Reader) to take a quiz - this will earn them possible prizes, increase their reading age and work their way through the reading level certificates! (see the link below - pupils will need their login details)

  • myONOnline Reading - pupils will need to have been given their login details first

  • AR Quiz

WHITE ROSE MATHS

We follow White Rose Maths sequencing for the teaching of mathematics.  Below is the overview for each term and the concepts to be taught according to the year 5 National Curriculum for maths.

Maths Yearly Overview

Year 5 and 6 Spelling List

The above is a list of words that children in year 5 & 6 need to understand the meanings of, spell correctly and use within their writing.  Your child should have brought a copy of these words home to work through with you over the year.  Please let us know if you do not have access to this and we will provide you with another copy.

Homework

We will be setting homework each week for all the children in year 5.  This is set on a Tuesday and due in the following Monday.  Pupils will be required to use their yellow homework books to complete this and hand these back each week.  Homework participation will be monitored; do let us know if you have any problems and we can support your child with this in school.

For Project homework, the children will have a selection of activities that they can complete across the term.  House-points will be rewarded for all aspects of homework completed each week.

The homework sheets will also be emailed to you each week

Project Overview 2022-2023-Year 5.pdf

Our learning in Terms 1 & 2.

Below you will find some photographs of the learning that took place for our Ancient Greeks project.

To start off the year, we took part in a local history study. Year five chose to look at the impact of the railways and how they brought people to the Margate Main Sands. We went on a trip to Margate Railway and learned all about rail safety as well completing lots of work about local people.

We began the topic with an archaeological hunt. We had pictures of pieces of pottery and we had to try and pop them back to their original form.

We did some research about the Greek Gods and Goddesses - we made top trump cards about them.

Mr Ryan created an interactive story session of Theseus and the Minotaur. We acted out the story and used some of our PE skills.

In Science our topic was changing materials, we did lots of experiments about thermal insulators and conductors - some of our investigations went well and others needed a little explaining!

To celebrate The Queen's Jubilee, we created portraits of Her Majesty.

We went on a trip to Maidstone Museum, we took part in a pottery workshop to make our own Greek pots, looked around the museum and were able to handle some artifacts and replicas.

For Remembrance Day we created some collaborative poppy art using oil pastels

Black History Day - we read 'Unspoken' and then made quilt squares to replicate the secret messages of the Underground Railroad.

It was Pudsey dress and pyjamas for Children in Need Day - we also had some entries for the baking competition

In terms 3 & 4 our project was Can You feel the Force? With focus on the solar system and forces.

We had a visit from The Wonder Dome to kick-off our topic of the solar system - we learned so much about space and the missions.

We started the topic by looking at the work of artist Peter Thorpe and recreated some of his works with a little of our own imagination added

In our Power of reading lessons we studied the book Corey's Rock. We did some research about the Orkney islands and created some shape poems of sea creatures.

We have tested lots of hypotheses in science relating to gravity, air-resistance, water-resistance and friction by making parachutes, boats and studying the works of Galileo and Newton

For online safety week, we discussed what we can do to keep ourselves and others safe when using online platforms. We created some posters of advice.

We were invited to Hartsdown Academy to check-out their science labs and participate in some exciting experiments - we loved using the Bunsen burners!

In art and Dt we used mixed media to print, sew and use pastels to create out space creations on material.
