Maths

Pupils at Holy Trinity and St Johns CEP Primary School are taught mathematics in mixed-ability classes in EYFS, KS1 and KS2. Cohort dependent, some year groups may set the classes. This could be to help prepare the children for their SATS (in Maths and English only) or to support children working below or above year group expectations. Each class teacher, with the exception of those working in the Reception classes, is expected to provide a daily lesson for Mathematics, which should last for at least an hour.

The approach to teaching, recommended by the National Curriculum for Mathematics, is based on three key principles: fluency, reasoning and problem solving, which are the fundamental of mathematics. Pupils practice fluency through varied and frequent practice, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Pupils are taught to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language. Pupils build up to solving problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At HTSJ we use a variety of manipulatives to support pupil's learning. Some of these include;

Times Tables Rockstars In Year 4, as per the Government's National Curriculum Framework for Mathematics, children will assessed in a Multiplication Tables Check. The aim is to support children in becoming fluent with their recall of the multiplication tables up to 12 x 12 by the Summer Term of Year 4. At Holy Trinity & St John's, to support children (in and out of school) we are pleased to provide children access to Times Table Rockstars . This is a great resource in which children can practice their times tables to improve their knowledge, speed and recall of multiplication and division facts. Children can strive to beat their own speed and points, as well as compete against other children, classes and schools. Children have their own log in which they can use to access Times Table Rockstars online or on the app. If you need any support with this please contact your child's class teacher. Numbots - For KS1 Numbots is a great way to support your child with their numberbonds, it is an interactive site where children can challenge other children and can collect coins. As teachers we are able to monitor how often your child uses this and are able to see progress being made with quick and fluent recall.
