Reading

Reading in year six is at the epicenter of all our curriculum learning, therefore reading at home everyday is extremely important.  All pupils in year six have been provided with a home reading record and the expectation is to read a minimum of 4 times a week for a period of approximately 20 minutes.  Please sign your child's reading record every time they read as this will also earn them house points.

Pupils all have access to our online reading platform myON and can also use this for their reading.  Every time they read online they MUST take the quiz at the end to explore their understanding.

Pupils reading physical books are encouraged to read books of interest.  Every pupil has a recommended zone level of reading which is allocated based on their word reading and comprehension ability.

Physical books can be quizzed on using their Accelerated Reader unique login.  All quizzes earn points and prizes and pupils are encouraged to reach one million words (or more) over the course of the year!

TTRS (Times Table Rockstars)

Pupils can enhance their multiplication tables knowledge through accessing TTRS.  We recommend a minimum of 10 minutes everyday for children to complete their heatmaps of fluency and speed.  These are vital to all our mathematical learning across the curriculum.

Pupils with rise up the rankings with their speed and there are in-house competitions set every week to earn house points, class and individual prizes.  The best part is it's fun too!

General Information

Uniform (all jumpers and coats clearly named): Pupils are encouraged to come into school wearing the correct uniform and where this is not possible please provide a note to the class teacher.  Please see the school uniform expectations on the website - wearing the correct uniform is part of being Ready, Respectful and Safe which is our daily expectation for all pupils at HTSJ.

PE: This is on a Friday afternoon in Terms 5 & 6, please ensure all pupils come to school wearing the correct PE kit and their house coloured t-shirt.

Homework:  This will be set on a weekly basis and will be based around new and consolidating learning.  All pupils in year six are expected to complete as much of the homework books as possible and will be provided with a timetable as some aspects will be part of the weekly lessons.

Water bottles and Snacks: It is important for pupils to stay hydrated and are not hungry during the school day.  Whilst we have access to water in class; we would prefer pupils to bring in a water bottle of their own which is clearly labelled with their name so they may refill them as required.  Please no squash or fizzy drinks - water only!

Pupils can also have a healthy snack at morning break - fruit, raisins vegetable sticks etc. No sweets or chocolate!

We are a nut free school and have pupils in the year group with nut allergies so please be vigilant with this when providing snacks and packed lunches.

Equipment: General stationery required for the children's learning will be provided, however some children prefer to bring their own.  We encourage this, however it is the pupil's responsibility to keep their items safe.  Pupils write in BLUE ink handwriting pens only.  Rulers must not be gel bendy rulers.
